Leeds United suffered a heartbreaking EFL Cup defeat at Stamford Bridge, throwing away a two-goal lead before eventually losing 6-3 to Chelsea in an incredible nine-goal thriller.

The night couldn't have started much better for Leeds. The Whites came flying out of the blocks and stunned Chelsea by racing into a 2-0 lead. Leeds looked confident, aggressive and dangerous in attack, putting the home side under serious pressure and giving the travelling supporters plenty to celebrate.

Chelsea, however, responded quickly and began to work their way back into the contest. Leeds had opportunities to extend their advantage, but the hosts eventually found a way back into the game and suddenly the momentum shifted.

From there, the match descended into chaos. Chelsea continued to find gaps in the Leeds defence and turned the game completely on its head. Having been two goals behind, the hosts suddenly found themselves in control as the goals kept coming.

Leeds did manage to fight back and score three times on the night, showing plenty of attacking quality and refusing to give up despite Chelsea's relentless pressure. But defensively, the Whites simply couldn't stop the hosts from adding to their tally.

The final whistle confirmed a 6-3 defeat, bringing Leeds' EFL Cup campaign to an end in the most dramatic fashion.

There will be huge frustration for Leeds after being 2-0 ahead and ultimately conceding six goals, but the attacking display provides something to take forward. The Whites showed they can cause serious problems against Premier League opposition, even if their defensive performance ultimately proved costly.

It was a night of what might have been for Leeds — two goals ahead, three goals scored, but ultimately knocked out after an extraordinary comeback from Chelsea.
